SF is considering making prostition legal. I just heard about it, but I really hope it passes for a few reasons. Mainly the ability for prostitutes to report crimes committed on them and actually bring them out of the shadows where they can get good health care, education, and make it a bit safe. I like the idea of it being safer, for both the customers and the workers.

Prostitution isn’t going to go away, it may be called the oldest profession, but the key part is, it is a profession. And its a profession that has been around for a very long time and all the legalization won’t make it go away.

Every culture has its hot buttons. I remember seeing a German commerical of a woman breaking nuts with her buttocks which would have been banned in this country, but then talking to friends from India who never saw kissing on screen (in a movie) before the US.

The US has had a few decisions which we would question as sane, both lawyers who make it and judges who agree. There is sometimes a point where technical arguments have more weight than what we feel is common sense.

Concerning the Nazi cross things. It basically the same thing as zero tolerance. Using the rules strictly written as an excuse not to be intelligent about it. Hrm, maybe I should write an essay about Intelligent Intolerance? :)

[quote:ddt7e6om]Every German child is at school totally brainwashed into a guilt complex. WW II was our grandparents’ fault, our parents’ fault, our fault and will be our childrens’ fault our grandchildrens’ fault and their grandchildrens’ fault…[/quote:ddt7e6om]

My third year German book was pretty much all this. It was depressing and we had a few days where we talked about the perceptions of WWII in Germany because of it.

[quote:ddt7e6om]And in my job I would never dare to publicly express the views I share here with you. Could end my career, too. [/quote:ddt7e6om]

I suspect that what I say here could end my career, both of them, also. In my case, it is my dislike of the war on drugs, terrorism, and pedophiles. Here, that will get me in a LOT of trouble, but its what I feel verses what is safe to say.

One could say stripping has the same problems. Some people like it, some people regret it, many people use it to pay their way through college (or for other reasons). Sex sells, but I think in some ways, making it legal will help prevent the story-quality “forced prostitution” a bit and make it safer for everyone in general.

I suspect, if it becomes legal, it will be pretty much the same as other places where it is legal, like Germany (if I recall correctly) or Amsterdam. It will just become something, but after the initial surge, it will have the same pattern.

Sadly, it was turned down by a relatively high margin. So was the prop 8, which has managed to depress me for most of the day once I found out. It is… frustrating, but I don’t agree with the No Prop 8 people turning around and trying to sue. People have spoken and, as much as I hate it, maybe they should wait 4-8 years before trying again.

But, it still hurts. :(
