Review - The Highest Bidder by Sommer Marsden
4 stars
I enjoyed this little gem but there were a few leaps of intuition that I had to struggle a bit more with. The introduction was wonderful in setting the character’s personalities and their back story. It was done quickly without a lot of fuss and I could easily empathize with the characters.
It was when Ms. Marsden introduced the male lead that I had trouble. The female lead gets excited and hot from a description relatively simple characteristics. I didn’t find it believable. I need a bit more to feel like there is something there.
Once I got past that, the interaction between the two leads created a very enjoyable story. They circled around each other, lovely sex, a few mistakes. The doubt and self-critical nature of the female lead was spot on but I thought the male lead was trolling a bit much for compliments.
There was a few things with the climax of the… plot that I thought ruined it for me. There wasn’t enough hints of what was going on and I thought most of her responses were wonderful and built up nicely. There was one line I didn’t care for, and since I try not to ruin in reviews, it involves her pointing and saying something. I thought it could have been done differently for more impact.
I love the best friend and her snarky comments through the scene. It was believable and she acted as a wonderful excuse to get through the story without being too obtrusive.
That said, the sex was hot, the flow of relationship between the above points was great, and I thought the best friend was adorable. The conclusion was satisfying except for one jump of plot.
I would definitely read more in this vein.
