Daddy's Little Hymen (title stolen)

Okay, this one is a bit freaky. Dads and their younger daughters going through a ritual where the dad promises to protect his daughter’s virtue. Basically, promising to protect their virginity until they get married.

[quote:bi0z9ywc]I, [daughter’s name]’s father, choose before God to cover my daughter as her authority and protection in the area of purity. I will be pure in my own life as a man, husband and father. I will be a man of integrity and accountability as I lead, guide and pray over my daughter and as the high priest in my home. This covering will be used by God to influence generations to come.[/quote:bi0z9ywc]

For some reason, this really, really bothers me. That and my father was never my high priest.

Yeah, except for the God bit, I think I agree. One thing I hate about statutory rape laws is that they aren’t really rape. They are actually based on property destruction laws. You “ruin” a girl’s chance of getting a good marriage when you have sex. One reason statutory rape requires consent on both sides for it to be actually statutory rape. This promise/oath is basically embracing a law that I don’t like. I also don’t view my parents as a keeper, never have and probably never will. They were there to guide me, but they let me make mistakes on my own.

As for the God bit… eh, that is a different issue. I don’t like anything done for a god. Yes, I am religious and I do many things for my religion, but I also believe that religion should be explored and decided at the onset of adulthood, not childhood. Religion should always be a choice, not a matter of fact.

Fortunately, this “purity” ball isn’t a law. I’d be fighting it tooth and nail if it was, even if I got branded. But, its an unhealthy thing and I don’t think it works.
