Sex offender must announce presence in car

I know that we are trying to save the world for our children. And the evils of child molestors need to be identified. We already have rules that require one to register their presents, websites to help you identify them and their crime (at least in Illinois), but I think this one has gone a bit too far.

The judge in the case ordered than the old man, who admitted to it with a plea bargain, had to post a sign up at his house. In addition, he has to mark the car he is in with his presence, basically driving around with a huge ass scarlet letter.

What happens when he does the time? How can you keep on living your life after five years of basically being required to announce to th world, both at home and in public, that you are a registered sex offender?

I think you're right about the scarlet letter aspect, and to me this is going too far.  It's hard enough as it is for someone on the list to get a house and a job, and very easy to get on the list that has nothing at all to do with rape or child molestation - just look at that kid in Georgia that got thrown in jail for receiving a blowjob.  To me, if you let them out of jail, that means they've already paid for their crime, and while it might be prudent for law enforcement to keep track of people who have a history of all felons, let along just rapists and pedophiles, I think that this public sex offenders list is going too far.

I am once more amazed at what judges can do in the US.
What is the legal basis for requiring that guy to make signs on his house and car?

There are a couple of laws in most states that require you to give public notice if you are a registered sex offender. You don't have to say what it is for, but Illinois identifies you as a low, medium, or high risk. Child rapists are always high risk, molestors rarely are low risk. But, our judicial system allows a fair amount of leeway with the judges. So, a judge has the right to say "public notification" requires being put on the list, registering your home, and putting a sign on your front yard. The car things is relatively new.

But, yeah, being a sex offender really isn't a good indicator. I mean, being gay can get you on the sex offender list, even if you do it in the privacy of your own home. One lady became a registered sex offender because she liked to be tied up during sex. *sigh*

Felony and five years in prison. It was one of the examples of sex laws gone wrong.

Wow. For tieing her up because she WANTED it?
This doesnt sound like sex laws gone wrong, this sounds like a legal system gone wrong (not to mention common sense gone lost).

How you can people bear to live in a country like that?

(I am exaggerating, of course, but: If things like that were to happen here in Germany, I guess I'd drop my pacifist attitude and my job and start making bombs).
