Ibsen varies in quality... I thought Pillars of the Community, Hedda Gabler, The Wild Duck, and A Public Enemy much stronger than When We Dead Wake and Ghosts.

Comparing Chekhov with Ibsen turns out to be actually a little difficult to me, as I've read the first in a German translation, and the second in an English one. I've always been associating Ibsen more with British than with continental literature (wrongly ofcourse), partly because of this language issue (and partly because of his influence on Shaw and Joyce). And Chekhov - well, one shouldn't read a Russian in an English translation. But apart from that, maybe I should do a little comparative reading...

The only thing I was really comparing was the mood of the two playwrights ... usually the translations manage to get that across, because they can work with the play as a whole, getting the big picture, as it were, without worrying about the nuances of the details.

At least, that's my opinion. It's the only one I've got any right to; my Russian is ... well, after all these years, it's abysmal, is what ... I can't even communicate with my son-in-law's wife. (No, I'm not going to explain that.) My Norwegian is nonexistent, despite the heroic efforts of Gonz. So I read both in English.

Mambliss give me the first proposed picture for the Mummy's Girl. I figured I'd post it to see what everyone thought.

Hey, if we keep saying no, wouldn't that be a way of getting more and more pictures?

Well, I would like opinions. If I'm going in the right way, if anyone likes them, anyone hates them. I only have five or so right now, but I was kind of hoping for *something*. Here is the proposed one for chapter two.

It's a bit of a problem that I didn't read the novel. But, anyway, judging from the sketches - the composition of the second one seems nice enough. I don't know about the first one, though - I don't know what it means to depict. If the guy is the mummy the mummy is - well, silent, unresponsive, inexpressive. Not much personality there - but then again, I don't know whether mummies usually have a lot of personality. What if this mummy would usually feel a bit sarcastic about things, always raising one eyebrow, sometimes smiling faintly? I get the idea that Mamabliss doesn't really know what to do with him.

A thing about colors: Egyptians probably had a dark skin tone (they do in their paintings). Certain priests, however, were used to peel their skins on a daily basis, which made them look pink all the time. A brown girl and a pink mummy would look interesting, I think. At any rate, it would draw the eye to the mummy, something which doesn't seem to happen now he doesn't have a lot of personality. Or seems rather taciturn, or whatever it is.

The girl's hair style isn't very Egyptian, anyway... Did you consider the possibility of completely shaving her? Women did shave their heads in those ancient days, you know...

Well, the images are going to show up at the beginning of each chapter. The ones I gave were for chapters 1 and 2 respectively. Mainly they are just for flavor, and I thought it would be a nice touch for the story.

The setting in the Mummy's Girl isn't quite Egyptian. Actually, it is closer to an Aztec style creature, but the area for the first nine chapters is actually a jungle pyramid. The mummy bit doesn't happen until somewhere around chapter 8 or 9 (I forgot). The bald guy is going to end up a mummy for most of the book. :)

I'm hoping to see the rest of them soon so I can see how well MB did with my notes. I didn't think they were "not much to say" it was pretty close to what I asked for, but things always look different when viewed by someone else's eyes.

3 chapter images and 1 cover to go! Mamabliss just sent me a large batch of pictures and I'm only 4 images away from being able to move forward. And, since Mamabliss is having a bit of money crunch, I'm going to be dropping the money down to get Dolcett Girls illustrated next months. *squee*

So, here is the hottest picture of the last batch. :) Yummy water. Though, I've scaled it down because if you want a big pretty version, you got to support me and buy my book (when it comes out).

Make that 1 cover and 1 corrected picture. :) And then I start getting my .psd goodies. I can't wait, it might actually happen by the end of March!

Ooh. New room. Wow.
I'm not qualified to comment on Ibsen but I'd like to read Mummy's Girl sometime.  :)

Welcome! Don't worry, I'm not qualified to talk about Ibsen either, but doesn't stop me from doing it. I just have to read to keep up with all the smart people here. And to think I thought I was pretty good at philosophy. :P And religion but some of the guys here make me feel very little... and a desire to catch up. :D

As a minor update, I got all the chapter images and a really great draft of the cover. Here is a small version, but I think it turned out very well and SO much better than the last one. Mamabliss is coloring is and I hope to get it by next week. This is the front and back cover. I'm planning on doing a dark screened back for the back page and a line to the left of Anuset (the mummy's) shoulder where I'll have the binding edge. Something simple, just my byline and the title and probably a number on the bottom. At this point, I have 3 novels I'm planning on self-publishing so I'll just start numbering 0, 1, 2, 3... :D

Yesterday, I got to see what my book is going to look like. It isn't quite perfect, I missed a few things like the dedication page and I'm considering tweaking the line spacing, but it was in my hand.

... and I couldn't stop looking at it.

Minor little things, and to add the ISBN, but I'm well on my way. Just another week or so and I'll have the final. I'm so excited.

*bounce*

Oh, and I got me some ISBN goodies. :) I officially have a number, a bit pretty number that ends in 1. :)

And... I have it. One copy of The Mummy's Girl which looks like the final thing. I have a barcoder reader showing up on Tuesday or so, but then I'm sending this out. So, as the terms of the contest, you have to have logged in since August 9, 2007 and post at least one comment. Looking at my handy member list, I have thirty one people who have done that, which makes me pretty happy.

So, the random number generator of free stuff says...

24 or Blaidd Drwg.

They have a week to get back to me, otherwise I'll pick a new person.

And thanks for participating. I'm going to be running another contest over on Black Lace hopefully in a couple of weeks, and I might right another one at some point.
