This is a pretty good article on terrorism statistics. Basically, there are very few incidents of terrorism but we are basically told to be constantly afraid that it could happen at any time. After 9/11, my local mall closed down the trick or treating at the mall because of the fear of terrorism.

This is also related to some other things which I feel that the DHS doesn't have a clear goal in their mission and that they are basically doing a bit of general policing of the "American Way" more than "homeland security."
