Winning the race with death - Emily's Question!
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:05:33 AM »

Here is something that has guided my life. It is from Thornton Wilder's Our Town.

Emily:               “Goodbye, world.  Goodbye, Grover’s Corners…Mama and Papa.  Goodbye to clocks ticking…and Mama’s sunflowers.  And food and coffee.  And new ironed dresses and hot baths…and sleeping and waking up.  Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you!”

Emily:              “Do any human beings ever realize life while they live it—every, every minute?”

Stage Mgr:       “No.  The saints and poets, maybe—they do some.

This has made me realize it, so I though I would share.

Quite a bit of elitism there...

What of the unobtrusive shopgirl savouring the smallest change in light, smelling the rain, always thinking of her cat, welcoming each customer as a personal friend, someone to care for? She may never publish any poem or even write any prose, and she may not be religious at all, or know anything about theology, but still...

Hey Lud, did you read Robert Browning's Pippa Passes?

You mean the one with the line 'God's in heaven, all's right with the twats' ?  :)

I'm not sure about the twats...

Are they obnoxious little Nordic flies?

Glad to hear all's right with'em.

Just a play on word over the controversy over the use of the word in the poem!  :)
